Who I am and why I’m here

Hi there. I’m here because I love to write and I have something to say.  I think that there are plenty of people who feel a sense of cognitive dissonance (i.e. disconnect, struggle) when it comes to their passion for the environment and how it may create a seeming contradiction with their love of nice things.  I experience this struggle almost every day!  I want to provide an opportunity for people like me to learn from others who experience the same challenges!

Professionally, I’m the marketing director for a single family home building company.  It’s a great job, but it doesn’t satisfy my passion and curiosity for improving and protecting the environment.  What does satisfy me?  Yoga, hiking, being outdoors, watching documentaries about anything sustainability-related, and doing what I can to reduce my impact on our world.  I’m super inspired by people who give of themselves to better the lives of others. I love learning about how my food choices affect the environment, totally reinforcing my beliefs that all living beings are connected!  I love exploring new vegetarian/vegan recipes, and I feel confident that I could sustain myself solely on peanut butter and red wine.  I am passionate about the non-profit for which I serve as the board chair.  I love houses…I like decorating them and I like considering how a floorplan space could work better.  I love looking at houses, and I love moving!  I am a licensed real estate agent, and I hold a general contractor’s license.

So I said that my job doesn’t satisfy my passion for the environment.  That’s totally true.  But my job has a great deal of redeeming qualities.  I truly love seeing my ideas come to live in a creative environment, and I am proud of what I’ve helped my company accomplish as a new builder in only a short amount of time.  I’ve basically developed a brand and created a voice for my company.  Developing the first website for the company, executing the groundbreaking events, and launching a new brand has been incredibly rewarding.  I love the fact that I do have the opportunity to write from time-to-time.  And of course, my day job supports my passion for nice things…hence the “carats” in the title of this blog.

I love nature, and I feel like I should do everything I can to protect it.  But I also love comfort, convenience, and nice things!  This blog is about striking the right balance for ME between committing myself to living sustainability, and still living and loving my life.  This dividing line is different for everyone.  Some purists (vegans, committed environmentalists) will probably have beef (ha!) with my statements and comments.  I totally respect and admire people who can commit 100% to their cause, whether it be by giving up their car in favor of biking, eating/consuming only plant-based foods, or living off-the-grid.  The documentary “No Impact Man” totally changed my life too.  But I think there are a whole lot more people on this planet who WANT to do their part to make the world a better place for future generations, while still driving a nice car to their well-furnished home in a safe neighborhood.

I want to share stories about sustainable initiatives, environmental challenges, and help to open the eyes of readers to new and easy ways that they can contribute to a more healthy vibrant environment!  I look forward to forming new connections and meeting people who share my passions!

Cheers to a new beginning!
